Understanding CAP in the Context of Information Technology

In the realm of Information Technology, CAP is an acronym that stands for Consistency, Availability, and Partition tolerance. These are the three guarantees that a distributed computing system must balance according to the CAP theorem.

  • Consistency: Every read receives the most recent write or an error.
  • Availability: Every request receives a response, without guarantee that it contains the most recent version of the information.
  • Partition tolerance: The system continues to operate despite an arbitrary number of messages being dropped (or delayed) by the network between nodes.
